‘I had to take control’: gendered finance rationality in the UK

Bringing together insights from feminist political economy and everyday financialization, this paper explores the complex nature of women’s pension decisions. Women in UK experience structural constraints originating a system which ignores socially reproductive activities, they face limitations planning due to prevalent gender norms. Both aspects have significant impact on long-term financial wellbeing yet little attention has been paid how operate within these constraints, ultimately leading behaviors being construed as passive or irrational. Drawing 61 interviews, our conceptualizes practices adopted by women through gendered finance rationality, defined variegated shaped context arise. Rather than irrational victims an unequal welfare system, actively engage with seek out asset strategies seem more suited their life trajectories, but implicitly reinforce wealth inequalities.
